October is National Dental Hygiene Month

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends regular dental exams and professional cleanings twice per year. Dr. Beth C. Dunsmoor is diligent in insuring that our team consistently provides the highest quality dental cleanings.
Professional cleanings rid teeth of harmful plaque and tartar build-up that prevents tooth decay, periodontal disease, and other oral health problems. Regular professional cleanings can also help to remove surface stains keeping your smile brighter.
Along with regular professional cleanings, it is extremely important to practice good oral hygiene at home. Your oral health is as much up to you as with your dentist. If you routinely neglect your oral hygiene, your dentist can not always correct the results. Your overall health can be affected by poor oral hygiene habits.
Dr. Beth C. Dunsmoor recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice per day and also floss daily. She advises that you drink a glass of water after meals to help wash away sugars from foods and drinks. You should wait 30 minutes before brushing after eating or drinking acidic things to allow your saliva time to neutralize the acid and protect your tooth surface.
Additionally using toothpastes and mouth rinses that contain fluoride, eating a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks will contribute to your overall good dental hygiene. Using toothpastes, toothbrushes and mouth rinses that have the ADA seal of approval is always the best choice.
Brushing your child’s teeth, from the time they appear, gives them a strong foundation for a lifetime of good dental hygiene. Good personal dental hygiene supports the services of your dentist and helps to keep healthy gums and teeth throughout your lifetime. You can diminish the risk for periodontal disease by maintaining excellent oral hygiene.
Take National Dental Hygiene Month to assess your personal oral hygiene habits and make sure you are doing your part in keeping your mouth healthy.
